With spring here, I’ve been looking for a new planter for the sunny southeast corner of our yard. Of course I checked out Terrain, Anthropologie’s home and garden sister store, which is always filled with absolutely gorgeous — and absolutely expensive — garden supplies. At the Terrain site, I spied this wonderful vintage grape collecting crate in the outdoor gardening section. Perfectly suited for use as a planter, it ticked all the boxes with its French provenance and obvious character. At $398, however, I had to keep looking.

Imagine my delight when I came across this similar planter from home improvement store Lowe’s. Roughly the same size as Terrain’s grape crate, this planter hails from Lynchburg, TN and, in a previous life, was half of a barrel used to age Jack Daniel’s whiskey. This planter also shows an abundance of character with its aged wood and rusty bands — but only costs $31.98.

Granted, the Terrain grape crate does have handles and is more oval in shape, two features which could make it more suited to specific needs. But for my simple purposes, the Jack Daniel’s planter fits the bill just fine and is sitting on my porch right now, waiting to be filled with hot peppers, tomato, and okra.
